The Benefits of Not Using Insurance
Diagnosis: Insurance companies require a diagnosis for each client in order to cover the services, starting from the very first session. This creates a great issue as not everyone meets the criteria for a formal mental health diagnosis. Furthermore, therapists rarely have enough information to adequately form a proper diagnosis from the first session. Being misdiagnosed can be damaging for the client involved and can hurt their relationship with therapy services. Here at Blue Pine Psych Services, we do not believe it to be ethical to provide a mental health diagnosis for someone who does not fit the criteria.
Confidentiality: Confidentiality is often misunderstood by the insurance plan holder. A mental health diagnosis has the potential to become a part of your permanent health record, causing unintended consequences. If you are receiving mental health services through your employer benefits, your employer may have the ability to request a health care check and see that you are receiving treatment. By not using insurance, you can further protect your right to confidentiality.
Treatment timeline: Insurance often dictates and debates with the provider the length of time for mental health treatment. Oftentimes, insurance will limit the amount of times they will insure a client to be seen for services, and treatment is cut short. The benefit of not using insurance is that you and your therapist can dictate together what is clinically appropriate for a length of treatment.
